Cord Chewing

From your cat’s point of view, electric cords appear to be fun toys! But cats chewing on cords can have disastrous consequences. Here are a few easy steps you can take to keep your cats away from the dangers of cords:

First, take a careful look at all of the rooms accessible to your cat…from his point of view. You may need to get down on your hands and knees to do this properly (this is a great way to involve kids in this process too!) Be sure to check all surfaces that your cat can reach, including desks, shelves, tables, and countertops.

Once you have identified the cords that pose a potential danger to your cat, contain them and place them out of the cats’ reach if possible. Gaffer or duct tape can be a great tool for securing and hiding cords, especially if they are out of sight but still accessible to your cat.

If there are cords that cannot be properly secured, coat them with liquid dish soap. The unpleasant taste will keep your cats away. Just remember that the soap must be cleaned and reapplied frequently, because it can wear off and/or become coated with dirt, dust, and hair.
